1WHAT IS RSYNC?
2--------------
3
4rsync is a replacement for rcp that has many more features.
5
10ce5fbf 6rsync uses the "rsync algorithm" which provides a very fast method for
c627d613
AT
7bringing remote files into sync. It does this by sending just the
8differences in the files across the link, without requiring that both
9sets of files are present at one of the ends of the link beforehand.
10At first glance this may seem impossible because the calculation of
11diffs between two files normally requires local access to both
12files.
13
14A technical report describing the rsync algorithm is included with
c6e7fcb4 15this package.

18USAGE
19-----
20
21Basically you use rsync just like rcp, but rsync has many additional options.

31SRC on single-colon remote HOST will be expanded by remote shell
32SRC on server remote HOST may contain shell wildcards or multiple

90SETUP
91-----
92
93Rsync uses rsh or ssh for communication. It does not need to be setuid
14d43f1f 94and requires no special privileges for installation. It does not
c627d613 95require a inetd entry or a daemon. You must, however, have a working
d89322c4
AT
96rsh or ssh system. Using ssh is recommended for its security
97features.

99To install rsync, first run the "configure" script. This will create a
100Makefile and config.h appropriate for your system. Then type
101"make".
102
debb4505
AT
103Note that on some systems you will have to force configure not to use
104gcc because gcc may not support some features (such as 64 bit file
105offsets) that your system may support. Set the environment variable CC
106to the name of your native compiler before running configure in this
107case.
108

109Once built put a copy of rsync in your search path on the local and
110remote systems (or use "make install"). That's it!

112RSYNC SERVERS
113-------------
114
115rsync can also talk to "rsync servers" which can provide anonymous or
ed06894a 116authenticated rsync. See the rsyncd.conf(5) man page for details on how
e095b568
AT
117to setup a rsync server. See the rsync(1) man page for info on how to
118connect to a rsync server.

121MAILING LIST
122------------
123
124There is a mailing list for the discussion of rsync and its
125applications. It is open to anyone to join. I will announce new
126versions on this list.
127
9e3c856a 128To join the mailing list send mail to listproc@samba.org with
432b0fbd
AT
129no subject and a body of "subscribe rsync Your Name".
130
9e3c856a 131To send mail to everyone on the list send it to rsync@samba.org

139
140This will give you access to the bug tracking system used by the
141developers of rsync and will allow you to look at other bug reports or
142submit a new bug report.
143
144If you don't have web access then mail bug reports to

149CVS TREE
150--------
151
152If you want to get the very latest version of rsync direct from the
153source code repository then you can use anonymous cvs. You will need a
154recent version of cvs then use the following commands:
155
9e3c856a 156 cvs -d :pserver:cvs@cvs.samba.org:/cvsroot login
527cea66
AT
157 Password: cvs
158
9e3c856a 159 cvs -d :pserver:cvs@cvs.samba.org:/cvsroot co rsync
